The Background:
Before completing his University studies, Miguel was already shooting extensively for high-profile magazines. He provided work for almost every major publication in Bogotá -for more than 5 years-, and for advertising agencies as Lowe & Partners, Bates and Ogilvy. His photographs were featured in the most important magazines: Fucsia, Cromos, SoHo, Estilo Fedco, Don Juan, Axxis, Rolling Stone and Architectural Digest. His work covered fashion, portraiture, architecture, stills and reportage.
In addition, Miguel lectured on different levels of photography at Bogotá's top universities for 7 years, before deciding to travel to the U.S.A., the U.K. and Continental Europe to focus on his personal work and expand his international experience.
>
The Beginning:
Miguel completed his BA in Bogotá in late 1999, majoring as a Professional in Advertising with a Graphic Design emphasis. Although he had been attending a BA in Architecture as well, he understood that none of these choices matched his real professional motivation completely, and decided to put all his efforts into pursuing a career in Photography.
In fact, it had all started as early as 1991-1992 (his last two high-school years) when he spent almost every day in the darkroom. Shooting film permanently with a complete 35mm kit was an exciting experience. His initial photographic interests were based on views of the street and the urban. Later on, work as an assistant photographer (while still a university student), enriched his experience. By upgrading to medium, large and -in time- digital professional photographic formats, his body of work also gained a great deal in the exploration of new topics, while providing excitement and encouraging his dedication.
>
The Inspiration:
The opportunity to travel frequently has given Miguel a broader perspective of cultural aspects that transcend fashion and artistic frontiers.
Regarding artistic influences, music and film are the core of his visual approach. This intense love for music has made him DJ and play bass in several bands. Other influences include Plastic Arts: Surrealism, Pop Art, the German Bauhaus movement, Fashion and Contemporary Cinematography.
